Missing Bean opened in Oxford in 2009 as the city centre's first independently owned coffee shop. Roasting began in 2014 with a Coffee-Tech Ghibli 15kg roaster, upgraded to a Giesen 15kg in 2019 and then to an IMF 30kg in 2025.
The roastery is now based at their East Oxford headquarters alongside a warehouse and dedicated tasting room. The café network has grown to nine locations across Oxfordshire, including Abingdon, Banbury, Botley, Woodstock, and Charlbury, with Cowley and Maidenhead opening in 2026.
Missing Bean operates direct trade relationships with farms, buying beans directly and building ongoing producer relationships. Their house espresso, The Original, is a long-standing best seller, and they roast five days a week at the East Oxford site.
Co-founders Ori Halup and Vicky Troth both discovered specialty coffee in Sydney before returning to the UK and opening the business together.
