Old Spike Roastery was founded in Peckham in 2015 by two childhood friends, with a mission to roast specialty coffee while helping people transition out of homelessness through a barista training and employment programme.
Old Spike Roastery was founded in Peckham in 2015 by two childhood friends, with a mission to roast specialty coffee while helping people transition out of homelessness through a barista training and employment programme. The roastery now sits at Unit 1, LJ Works in Brixton (SW9 7FA), with seven cafes across London including Peckham Rye, Elephant and Castle, Fenchurch Street, New St Square, Piccadilly and Cabot Square.
More than 100 tonnes of coffee are roasted each year, over 350 individuals have been supported through the programme, and 65 per cent of profits are directed towards social and environmental work. Sourcing is built on direct relationships with farmers, with a focus on quality and seasonality, and prices often four to five times the Fairtrade minimum where the cup justifies it.
The Cafe Femenino lot from Peru, grown by women farmers, donates one pound from every bag to The Connection at St Martin's, supporting vulnerable women in London.
