Kaffeehaus Coffee Roasters is a father-daughter roastery based in Sacriston, County Durham. Bernhard and Carina founded their first business, Kaffeehaus Amadeus, as a cafe in Lanchester in 2013, bringing an Austrian filter coffee culture to the North East at a time when that kind of approach was almost entirely absent from the region.
They launched the roastery side — originally called Durham Coffee — in June 2020, making it Durham's first dedicated coffee roastery. The roastery uses an Air Motion roaster, which they chose specifically for its lower energy consumption and reduced emissions compared to conventional drum roasters.
They source through direct relationships with green bean importers and farmers, and are transparent about the supply chain in a way that goes beyond generic sustainability claims. Their commercial commitments include supporting Point North and the North East Community Forest.
The roastery in Sacriston is open to visitors Wednesday to Friday.
