Crankhouse Coffee launched in 2014 in Exeter, beginning in a single car garage before moving through a converted barn on the edge of Dartmoor and a central city unit. It now operates from a small industrial space near Exeter Airport.

The business has grown without changing its focus: light-roast specialty coffee, direct trade sourcing, and a close interest in the science of the roast rather than just the craft. Crankhouse is a contributing member of the Specialty Coffee Association, World Coffee Research, the Alliance for Coffee Excellence, and One Percent for the Planet.

Their coffee buying reflects that membership. Recent lots have included experimental anaerobic processing from Colombia at 1,900 metres and inoculated washed lots from Chikmagular in India.

Equipment sales and subscription retail sit alongside wholesale for cafes.
