The Coffee Bean Shop was founded in 2008 by Lizzie Powell, based in Kent. The business began as a personal response to the gap between supermarket coffee and the freshly roasted beans Powell had discovered at a Covent Garden coffee shop, and it has grown from that starting point into a roastery selling wholesale coffee to trade customers across Europe as well as direct to consumers.

The company uses flame-powered roasting equipment and claims to have visited the farms of most of the coffees it sources, going beyond standard supply chain verification. It offers white label and private label coffee for coffee shops and businesses, and provides training for trade customers on espresso and grinding.
